In response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian products, the Canadian government is imposing a 25 percent tax on $155 billion worth of imports. These countermeasures aim to protect Canada’s interests, consumers, workers, and businesses and will remain in place until the U.S. removes its tariffs. However, U.S. goods already in transit when the measures take effect will be exempt. The United States exports more goods to Canada than to any other country, while approximately 70% of Canadian exports to the U.S. are used in manufacturing other products. This huge economic interdependence between the two countries makes the tariffs a major threat to cross-border trade and economic stability, While these measures are intended to protect the Canadian economy, they may have unintended consequences. The Canadian agri-food industry is particularly vulnerable, as Canada’s trade response affects several U.S. agricultural products, including live poultry, meat and edible offal, dairy products, grains, fruits, coffee etc.

The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) which represents over 190,000 farms raises serious concerns about the tariffs’ potential to disrupt well-established supply chains, leading to higher consumer prices and weakening the competitive edge of North American agricultural industries. Although Canada and the United States agreed on February 3, 2025, to postpone imposing their respective tariffs on imports, uncertainty remains regarding the long-term implications of these policies and the possibility of future revisions. The CFA emphasizes that efforts are underway to collaborate with the government in developing strategies to support affected farmers and agricultural businesses. The aim is to provide necessary assistance to industries as they manage economic challenges induced by the tariffs

The U.S. Global Change Research Program produces a comprehensive document called the National Climate Assessment, which is mandated by Congress. This report serves as a vital resource for understanding and addressing climate issues by providing essential scientific information on how climate change affects the United States, aiding policymakers in developing strategies to combat global warming. Experts are concerned that the incoming Trump administration plans to introduce biased and inaccurate perspectives into the report, undermining trust in climate science and potentially harming the country’s international standing. These concerns stem from decisions by Trump’s team to incorporate “diverse viewpoints” that may elevate climate science skeptics, increase White House control over scientist selection for shaping the report, and reject or modify sections created during the Biden administration.

The Trump administration has previously attempted to minimize or discredit climate science. In Trump’s first term, his team released the climate report the day following Thanksgiving, hoping to reduce public attention. However, this strategy backfired, resulting in extensive media coverage. Weakening the report’s credibility could erode global confidence in U.S. climate leadership, hinder progress on global warming policies, and potentially limit the ability to make climate-friendly policies or defend against legal challenges related to environmental regulations.

Trump has revealed intentions to withdraw from the Paris Agreement, a global pact aimed at reducing carbon emissions contributing to climate change. Adopted by 196 nations at the 2015 COP21 climate conference. This decision could impede global emission reduction efforts. It may also rob the agreement of input from one of the world’s major emitters. The broader consequences include the potential danger to climate initiatives linked to the Paris Agreement, such as monitoring emissions, climate investments, and providing compensation to vulnerable nations for climate-related damages.

The announcement to lift restrictions and accelerate fossil fuel production obviously places short-term economic goals over long-term climate goals as huge setbacks confront the U.S. domestic climate targets, including Biden’s net-zero emissions goal by 2050. Critics argue that the push for cleaner energy, public health concerns, and growing climate awareness drive the transition from fossil fuels. This implies that economic factors, rather than Trump’s policies, will likely play a more significant role in shaping future energy production trends. Nevertheless, the prioritization of fossil fuel interests and skepticism toward international climate agreements are set to hamper global climate cooperation and might delay the transition to sustainable energy solutions.

As the world faces escalating challenges from rising greenhouse gas emissions and extreme weather, urgent actions are required for sustainable development and disaster risk reduction. The UN’s World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report for 2023 highlights the dire global water situations intensified by climate change. The document indicates that this year saw the lowest water levels in over three decades, with substantial decreases in river flows affecting water accessibility for populations, farming, and natural habitats. This diminishing water supply occurs alongside a growing worldwide water scarcity issue, with 3.6 billion individuals currently lacking sufficient water access, a number expected to increase to over 5 billion by 2050. Glaciers also experienced unprecedented mass reductions, contributing to elevated sea levels and further straining water resources.

Extreme weather patterns, including transitions from La Niña to El Niño, have increased severe floods and droughts globally. In Africa, the human toll was exceptionally high, with nations like Libya experiencing devastating floods caused by dam failures. Meanwhile, South America and certain areas of the United States faced intense droughts, resulting in unprecedented low water levels in locations such as the Amazon and Lake Titicaca.

The report calls for immediate action to manage water resources more effectively and emphasizes the urgent need for resource monitoring, data sharing, and global collaboration to tackle these challenges, particularly in the Global South. Additionally, the report aligns with the UN’s Early Warnings for All initiative, which aims to improve hazard monitoring and provide early warning systems by 2027.

The agricultural sector is on the point of significant breakthroughs in food production and operational processes, all set to revolutionize the sector for a sustainable future. The integration of analytical and generative artificial intelligence is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping an industry’s trajectory.

Generative AI (gen AI) in agriculture includes applications that process diverse unstructured data sets, such as geospatial and weather information, to perform multiple tasks and generate new ideas by identifying patterns within these datasets. This contrasts with analytical AI, which typically addresses specific tasks using structured data and established rules. Since agriculture deals with large volumes of unstructured data; gen AI can synthesize vast data points on weather, soil conditions, and pest pressures to develop testing scenarios, which analytical AI can simulate. Integrating both technologies promises to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve environmental impact across the agricultural sector.

While many agricultural players are keen on the potential of generative AI (gen AI), most are yet to harness its capabilities. According to the article, AI creates substantial value in two main areas: “on the acre,” which focuses on crop optimization and livestock production, and “for the enterprise,” which enhances business functions such as R&D, marketing, and operations. Successful implementation requires tailoring the solutions to meet the specific needs of each player within the agricultural value chain. Realizing this potential will involve realigning approaches to modernize technology infrastructure to avoid fragmentation, strengthening data foundations to integrate large volumes of unstructured information, and upskilling talent across the organization. Agricultural stakeholders must prioritize adoption and change management to ensure that new technologies are effectively integrated into work processes. Early risk management is also critical, especially in addressing the ethical and regulatory challenges posed by gen AI.

A devastating landslide on the Chilcotin River in British Columbia poses a severe threat to the region’s salmon populations, particularly the sockeye salmon, which rely on this river to reach their spawning grounds. The Fraser River in Canada is home to the largest run of sockeye salmon in Canada and a significant population in the Fraser watershed

The landslide will not only physically block their migration route but may also alter the scent cues used for navigation, increasing the mortality risk. Given the uncertainty surrounding the potential consequences of releasing the water behind the landslide, concerns rise about the fate of these fish. The situation has created significant uncertainty about their survival, especially as they confront increasing temperatures and dwindling energy reserves while awaiting their spawning areas. Other fish species, like Chinook salmon and steelhead, which also use this migration route, are at risk.

The government is devising strategies to safeguard salmon populations impacted by the landslide on the Chilcotin River. However, the scarcity of viable options available before the collapse of the landslide-formed dam imposes limitations. This situation is similar to a previous landslide on the Fraser River in 2019, where emergency measures like transporting salmon past the obstruction and creating a fishway were necessary to save key salmon populations. Perhaps once again, drastic interventions might be necessary to mitigate severe damage to salmon attempting to reach their spawning grounds.

Bill Gates announced a $2.8 billion investment in Nigeria to strengthen the nation’s healthcare, nutrition, and agricultural sectors. Speaking to the National Executive Council (NEC) during its session, the American billionaire and philanthropist emphasized the importance of investing in Nigeria’s most valuable asset—its people—while tackling its economic challenges. Nigeria plays a vital role in Gates’ philanthropic endeavors, serving as a key focus for his foundation’s initiatives across Africa and emphasizing Gates’ longstanding commitment to advancing development in the country.

He emphasized the significance of primary healthcare and data-informed improvements in managing the workforce while also drawing attention to the severe problem of child undernourishment in Nigeria, which accounts for almost 50% of child fatalities.

In agriculture, the renowned philanthropist expressed concern about Nigeria’s food insecurity, worsened by climate change and inefficient agricultural practices. He urged increased funding for agricultural extension services, fertilizer distribution, and rural infrastructure to support farmers. In addition, Gates advocated for the adoption of cutting-edge crop varieties, such as the recently developed cassava strains backed by the Gates Foundation, which offer improved yields and enhanced resistance to pests. Bill Gates has been active in visiting several nations lately. In addition to Nigeria, he has also visited Ethiopia and Pakistan this year to contribute to addressing various global issues, including healthcare, food insecurity, and economic growth.

Bioindustrial Innovation Canada (BIC), a not-for-profit business accelerator offers strategic investments and advice to developers of clean, green, and sustainable technologies. Through initiatives like the Clusters Component of the AgriScience Program, BIC helps mobilize industry, government, and academia to address key national issues and advance the bioeconomy. The AgriScience Program, a component of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership, supports innovation and research benefiting agriculture and the agri-food sector.

In 2015, Canadian bioproducts producers utilized about 22 million metric tonnes of biomass, with 43% originating from agriculture. This sector generated a substantial $4.27 billion in revenue that year. Moving forward, the global bioeconomy is anticipated to experience significant growth, potentially reaching $10.5 trillion CAD annually by 2030, with Canada’s share estimated at up to $240 billion CAD. The bioeconomy aims to utilize renewable biological resources to sustainably produce food, goods, and energy, thereby driving economic growth. Canada has invested substantially in this sector, including $5.5 million through the Growing Forward 2 framework and $11.2 million via the Canadian Agricultural Partnership.

This funding opens new avenues for farmers to benefit from agricultural by-products that would otherwise be wasted, representing a significant advantage for farmers and contributing to a more sustainable future for all Canadians. The focus on renewable resources and cooperative initiatives highlights a dedication to environmental sustainability and economic growth, and positions Canada at the forefront of the sustainable technology and bioindustrial revolution.

In a major move to improve the Nigerian agricultural sector, the Federal Government, in partnership with Origin Tech Group, has introduced the ‘Greener Hope Agricultural Productivity Programme.’. The ‘Greener Hope Agricultural Productivity Program’ is a strategic initiative aimed at modernizing Nigeria’s agricultural sector by implementing large-scale mechanization and advanced technologies to establish integrated food security systems. The initiative is a ten-year plan that targets crops of immediate need, with a focus on the 2024 dry season . This program should assist smallholder farmers transition from traditional farming methods to more productive and sustainable agricultural practices as the project’s scope includes providing essential irrigation and mechanization equipment, as well as land clearing services for large farms. The program is anticipated to create approximately 1.5 million jobs and decrease food prices by arouhttps://leadership.ng/agric-minister-applauds-tech-groups-partnership-with-fg/nd 25%.

Concurrently, the Nigerian Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) is conducting nationwide investigations to uncover the reasons behind the rising food prices. Participants in the food supply and distribution sector, including wholesalers and retailers, are suspected of engaging in conspiracy, price gouging, hoarding, and other unfair practices that restrict competition, limit food supply, and artificially inflate food prices.

Overall, these combined efforts aim to modernize the agricultural sector while ensuring fair practices in the market, thereby promoting a more sustainable and affordable food supply for all Nigerians.

The Russian media is engaged in a coordinated effort to manipulate public opinion by targeting Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish audiences through disinformation campaigns. According to the Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRLab), the Russian media is amplifying Polish farmers’ grievances and spreading false narratives to incite anti-Ukrainian sentiment among Polish citizens. The protests that began on February 9, 2024, were sparked by EU climate policies and Ukrainian grain imports. Ongoing Russian information warfare have since exploited these local grievances to achieve broader geopolitical objectives. The disinformation campaign already extends beyond traditional media, as social media sources have been central to crafting misleading narratives that portray Poland as a betrayer of Ukraine. In particular, targeted advertisements and questionable Facebook pages have been used to spread anti-Ukraine and anti-EU sentiments. Telegram channels have been set up to accuse the Ukrainian government of mishandling relations with Poland and Polish-language websites have also been used to spread fear about Ukrainian goods. Pro-Kremlin media outlets portray Poland as having opened a “second front” against Ukraine, implying that Poland has renounced its support for Ukraine and even alleging that Ukrainian agricultural products pose health risks to Polish citizens.

Russia’s utilization of advanced tactics in its information warfare is not new. Over the years, Russia has persistently engaged in various strategies to manipulate local and international public opinion through disinformation campaigns, social media, cyber operations, and state-controlled media. Similarly, Kremlin’s intent in this situation demonstrates a strategic spread of disinformation with the intent to sow discord and deepen divisions between Poland and Ukraine. This could undermine trust in European institutions and disrupt support for Ukraine during its ongoing conflict with Russia.
