Title

How to unring the bell: A meta-analytic approach to correction of misinformation

Summary

The study offers a meta-analysis of 32 separate investigations to gauge the efficacy of correcting misinformation and to identify the factors that influence this process. The findings indicate that while corrections do have some impact in reducing the influence of misinformation, they are more effective when the messages are consistent, resonate with the audience’s beliefs, and are issued by the original source of the misinformation. On the other hand, corrections are less effective when the misinformation comes from a trustworthy source, is frequently repeated and presented in this paper. These findings lend credence to the mental models theory and provide practical recommendations for future research.
