Title

School closures on rural education: Examining remote learning experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile.

Summary

This chapter explores the impact of school closures on rural education in Chile during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on remote learning experiences. Based on interviews with 12 dyads of seventh-grade students and their mothers, beneficiaries of the “Yo elijo mi PC” (I Choose My Computer) program, the study reveals that delays in the program led to smartphones becoming essential for education. While mothers recognized the educational value of smartphones, students felt empowered using them but primarily viewed them as tools for entertainment and social media.
