Title

The Truth About the Truth: A Meta-Analytic Review of the Truth Effect

Summary

This study explores the truth effect, indicating that repetition enhances trivia statements’ perceived truth. A meta-analysis of 51 studies reveals that the effect is more pronounced when comparing repeated statements to new ones (between-items criterion) than when measuring the increase in truth ratings from the first to the second encounter (within-items criterion). The results suggest that different psychological processes may underlie these effects, supporting the processing fluency account of the truth effect.
