This study reviews online communities research using the information systems lifecycle framework, proposing a sequence for incorporating success conditions during initiation and development. Online communities evolve through distinct lifecycle stages, and recommendations for success vary depending on the community’s developmental stage. The goal of the online community determines the components necessary for success. By understanding these factors, online community builders and researchers can increase the chances of creating a thriving and sustainable online community.
