Misinformation and disinformation are increasingly undermining public trust, with harmful effects such as promoting false health information and increasing polarization. Current approaches, including enhancing digital literacy, have had mixed results due to the complexity of the misinformation ecosystem and the failure of traditional methods to capture its interdependencies. This paper advocates for the use of systems thinking tools, such as causal loop diagrams and stock-and-flow models, to better understand the dynamics of misinformation and to design more effective interventions.
