Title

Balance as bias: Global warming and the US prestige press.

Summary

This paper shows that US prestige press coverage of global warming from 1988 to 2002 has caused a significant divergence between public and scientific discourse, attributed to media practices and journalistic norms, particularly balanced reporting. Analysis of major US newspapers reveals that adherence to balance leads to biased coverage of anthropogenic climate change and related actions.
