The methodological challenges of studying fake news

Summary

In an attempt to detect and analyze “fake news in two controversial Canadian news media outlets, (Global Research and Rebel News), this paper examines methodological challenges in fact-checking on top 400 news stories shared on Twitter and Facebook, finding that 71% contained false, misleading, or doubtful information. The study demonstrates that audiences engaged most with stories about politics, internal order, human interest, and international news.
