Combating misinformation online: re-imagining social media for policy-making

Summary

This paper examines the role of social media in connecting citizens and policymakers while highlighting the challenges of combating misinformation. Through data collected from policymakers in Austria, Greece, and Sweden, it identifies key themes necessary to support policy-making, such as expert networks, validation of online information, data visualization, and transparency of flagged content. The paper offers recommendations for developing social media policies that enhance evidence-based decision-making in addressing misinformation.
