Summary

This paper aims to clarify the concept of fake news and guide future research. It reviews how “fake news” has been defined and operationalized in previous studies, analyzing 34 academic articles published between 2003 and 2017. It presents a typology categorizing fake news into six types—news satire, news parody, fabrication, manipulation, advertising, and propaganda—based on levels of facticity and deception.
