The study compares the roles of strong and weak ties in facilitating information flow within intraorganizational social networks. It finds that strong ties are more effective for sharing information about activities within a specific organizational subsystem. In contrast, weak ties are more influential for information flow about activities outside the subsystem. The strength of weak ties lies in their ability to span boundaries, not due to individual efficiency but because of their more significant number. The highest likelihood of information flow is achieved when strong and weak ties are combined.
