Title

Masculinity and participation in China

Summary

This book chapter examines how participation, when viewed through a universal lens, can perpetuate a masculine perspective of knowledge and action. It uses a transcultural political economy approach to explore the marginalized experiences of rural men in China, contrasting state mechanisms with digital platforms. The chapter argues that participation theories should avoid universalizing power dynamics and instead highlight the specific conditions that enable individuals, from government actors to entrepreneurs, to act within those structures.
