Title

Mapping recent development in scholarship on fake news and misinformation, 2008 to 2017: Disciplinary contribution, topics, and impact.

Summary

This review article analyzes 142 journal articles on fake news and misinformation published between 2008 and 2017, discovering that communication scholars and psychologists contributed nearly half of the articles, though interest spans multiple disciplines. The most common topic is the effects of fake news/misinformation, and the review highlights a research agenda focusing on the production, spreading, and use of fake news. Male scholars are more productive and cited more often than female scholars in this field, with few producing extensive work on the topic.
