This study examines global patterns and trends in the spread of crop pests and pathogens, focusing on the factors influencing their redistribution. The study analyzes the saturation, or the extent to which pests occupy potential host areas, and links dispersal to factors like host range, climate, and socioeconomic variables. Fungal pathogens, despite having narrower host ranges, are the most widely spread. The study predicts that by mid-century, many major crop-producing regions may be fully saturated with pests. Climate change is expected to further impact pest distribution, and enhanced surveillance is needed, especially in developing nations.
