Title

The rise of social bots. Communications of the ACM,

Summary

Bots, or software robots, have existed since the early days of computing, with chatbots like Alan Turing’s envisioned algorithms sparking decades of AI research. Initially, bots like ELIZA were created for simple interactions, but today’s social media ecosystems have introduced more complex challenges, driving the development of social bots that mimic human behavior for economic and political purposes. These social bots now produce content and interact with users on social media, potentially influencing human behavior.
