Conflicting claims on Sanctions and Tariffs on Russian Agricultural Exports
According to a Russian news agency-Tass, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the imposition of unilateral sanctions has hindered the delivery of agricultural products to consumers in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, leading to increased food insecurity. Conversely, earlier reports suggested that sanctions imposed in response to Russia’s conflict with Ukraine do not restrict agricultural or medical trade. However, starting on July 1, the EU will enforce prohibitive tariffs on Russian and Belarusian agricultural products, based on a proposal from the European Commission on March 22, 2024. The EU Commission claims that these tariffs would not threaten global food security, especially for developing countries, and would motivate Russia to export to non-EU markets.
